Researchers sounds…Sonicsnaps

Today, we worked in groups and we imagined a story to help us to record sounds. We wrote our ideas on paper (places, objects …). you discovered our histories in future sessions when we started audio editing!

Breton remix

Today, we started the second session with exploring the website and listening the Mysounds from Barcelona.
We tried to guess what object was used to produce each sound, and we associated a gesture to each sound (to tear, crease, tap, shake…). We imagined the ways of producing and material.

_DSC9471

After listening to the mySounds from our sonic companions in Barcelona, our imagination got really started. We decided to remix their sounds. We learned how to use this software, how to import, edit, level the sound and we discovered the stereo. We picked up our headphones and opened our laptops to start composing. By trying and improvising we found out how sounds can be shaped, copied, cut and combined.

Finally, We did a selection of four sounds and we started an audio editing with Barcelona sounds. We have worked with pairs (2) on laptops to create our first soundscape with the software Audacity.

My Sounds from Saint-Guinoux!

Hello from Saint-Guinoux where it rains for a few days !
We are happy to start this first session of TCR with you and looking forward to share our sounds with our Spanish penfriends.

Monday, we have started our session by looking at the blog TCR on internet and we discovered that you were much older than us ! We have between 8 and 9 years. Your school seems much larger than ours but there are many more students ! We don’t have wide corridors in our school !

Here our classroom :
_DSC9461 copie

We have playing a game called “Sound Kim” (“Kim sonore” in french) The game has picture cards of objects (eg door, book, underground …) and an mp3 player with the sounds that correspond to each object. The purpose of the game is find the sound of each illustration.
This game has helped us to focus on the listening and given us ideas to produce sounds using everyday objects.

_DSC94d36
_DSC9444

After that, we recorded sounds from our own objects from home, our classroom or own schoolbag. Each pupil recorded the sound trying to avoid to get only drumming sounds.
On this pictures, you can see us during a recording session. We had : glue tube, moneybox, bell, green box, Egyptian pencils box, hot-water bag…… An object was made from a plastic bottle plastic containing coarse salt instead of using a musical instrument !

It was nice to listen afteward the recorded sounds as they ‘look’ really different. We have understood the differences between the sound produce in front of us and sound recorded.
Tuesday, we’ll begin to construct a soundscape with the “mysounds” of Spanish students. Looking forward to it !

Here are the sounds that we recorded Monday, try to find the sources of the sounds and you will find the other sounds on Freesound.

Welcome in Saint-Guinoux

Our city is called Saint Guinoux. It is in Brittany in France, our department is IlleetVilaine. The nearest big city is Saint Malo and our zip code is 35430. Saint Guinoux’s population is 914 persons.

Our school is in a small town called Saint Guinoux, in the countryside. We have six class-rooms from the “Toute petite section” to the CM2 (pupils are from two to eleven years old). There are eight very nice teachers.

We are going to school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday all day long from 8:45 AM to 3:30 PM. And on Wednesday from 9 to 12 AM. Saturday and Sunday are days off!

Every Thursday, we used to have cake sales to pay our project, called Greedy Thursday!

our school

We are 26 pupils : 13 CE2 and 13 CM1. We are in between 8 and 9 years old. Our teacher calls Nathalie Le Dévéhat and she is really nice. With her, we study English and we have got a Teddy called Sheepy. It is a black and white sheep.

Our Teddy Sheepy

In our class-room, we have several special spaces: one for mathematics, for French and one for history… We also have the sweet-words-space, where we can draw or write nice words for anyone we want.

Our Team 2

Our class is cool!

A word about our bell, it’s an automatic but it’s broken, then our teacher announce the breaks by clapping hands.

a door slamming, a shot, handcuffs, a jail…Shallow grave in Rennes !

That’s it, we got to final post of this edition of The City Rings.
It was two weeks fulled of surprises by discovering sounds from the others European schools, and more precisely, the sounds of Berlin Metropolitan School.

Last Monday, we first went through the blog TCR and we listened to the soundscapes from different countries. Then we started our postcards from sounds recorded at school.

This morning, we were all a little bit sad because it was the last day of the exchange. Be carefull the murderers of our stories are still running!
Wednesday, we began the session by watching contemporary music scores which look like abstract paintings very colorfull. We imagined sounds that can be produced by this picture.

We also watched some movies extracts: « A phantasy in color » by Norman Mclaren (1949) and “Yantra» by James Withney (1957).

These artists associate images and sounds by painting directly on the film.

Finally we finished our sound editing and we listened Postcards from Berlin posted on the blog.
Friday will be a listening session of our postcards and yours too. We hope you’ll like our sound productions and they will send you into anguish.

« Terrorific » sounds

Hello from Rennes !

In today’s session we have listened to soundscape from Berlin, but we didn’t recognize our sounds ! Then, we listened sounscape from Switzerland and we got there were our sounds. The one by Iris, Elodie and Lindsay !!!!!!!! had much success.

IMG_0883

Then we listened two soundtracks : « Music for Appartment », that some of us already knew ; « Wochenende » by Walter Ruttman, it’s a movie without picture (« cinema for the ear ») :

The idea was to close our eyes and guess a scenario for this soundtrack. The scenario could take place in a boilerworks or in a factory.

It was difficult to chose recording sounds, so we began to write keysword for help us. Alicia, Ines, Iman and Yuna wrote words « key prison », « policeman who runs », « gun », « handcuffs », « victory », and they recorded a piece of metal, steps , claps on hands, a book that falls, ans scissors. Others chose differents places of school, for exemple playground, cafeteria, toilets etc…

Brittany mixing Germany

Today, we started the second session with exploring the website and listening the Mysounds from Germany (BMS). We are looking forward to see your pictures to the next session !

We tried to guess what object was used to produce each sound, and we associated a gesture to each sound (to tear, crease, tap, shake…). We tried to imagine what recordings could be sound effects movie (eg. crumpled and torn paper to represent the fire burning, shake pencils in glass jar made us think of a musical instrument, maracas). We imagined the ways of producing and material.

IMG_1066

We noticed that we sometimes used the same objects (scissors, pencils, table and chair) and there was similarities. We found differences between the sounds produced with the same object. Every action on the object produces a different sound and so relates a different story (eg paper ripped, wrinkled, rubbed).

We discovered the Freesound website and we could see that all our Mysounds are online. We can listen our Mysounds at home and it’s the chance to introduce The City Rings to our family and friends!

IMG_1067

Finally, We did a selection of four sounds and we started an audio editing with BMS sounds. We have worked with pairs (2) on laptops to create our first soundscape with the software Audacity.

We learned how to use this software, how to import, edit and level the sound.
We gave a title to our sound composition, this is the result of soundscapes from BMS “My sounds” :

Mayola and Galeno created their soundscape entitled “Flac Flic DJ”

“Untitled”, Kylian and Oscar

This soundscape was created by Lindsay and Alicia, its title is “School crazy”.

Yuna and Imane, “The Factory”.

Elodie and Iris, “Sounds fake”.

Sarah and Arielle, “The party”.

Timothé and Marcel, “Crazy laptops”.

Nelo and Eliott, “Funny sounds”.

My Sounds from Rennes !

Hello everybody from Rennes where Winter has arrived !

We are happy to start this first session of TCR with all these countries together and we are looking forward to share our sounds with our German penfriends.

We have started our session by playing a game called “Sound Kim” (“Kim sonore” in french) while waiting for internet to come back . The game has picture cards of objects (eg door, book, underground …) and an mp3 player with the sounds that correspond to each object. The purpose of the game is find the sound of each illustration.
This game has helped us to focus on the listening and given us ideas to produce sounds using everyday objects.

Then, we have listened to all the bells and thought about the descriptions of the schools, especially the Berlin Metropolitan school. The class was really looking forward to hear the sounds from Berlin and we were surprised to discover their ringtone!

After that, we have chosen an object in the classroom and in our schoolbag. Each pupil recorded the sound trying to avoid to get only drumming sounds.

On this pictures, you can see us during a recording session. We had : diapason, little car, pearls, scissors, rule, balloon, measuring tape…

SonicPostcards from Rennes

Hi all,

Tuesday, January 22 :
Here we come to the end of the session of the city rings !

Before returning to realizing our audio editing, we’re reading the post of berliner students. After listening to each sound, we try to guess how and with what they were made. Sometimes there were many ideas for one sound! Eg, the sound “water pump” was the sound of a tap for some pupils, was the noise of a toy kitchen for other.
We have listening some other sounds on “freesound”, now we can use the website easily !

Unfortunately, when we wanted to take our editing audio… files were no longer on computers ! Because of this bug, we repeated all our poscards! We were really disappointed!

To you now discover our daily sonic environment … somewhat reinterpreted!

We tried to reproduce a day of bad weather with thunder. For example, the wind noise was made from a dictionary, turning the pages very quickly.

We were inspired by the sound of a bell. It made us think firemen, so we completed the editing audio on this topic.

When you hear this sound, we hope to give you the impression that you are in a factory. Noises are mechanical and repetitive, like an assembly line.

We imagined being in a playground. But the atmosphere of the school yard will be a little crazy. Sounds in the school grounds were recorded during a battle of snowballs.

We chose to create a soundscape around the theme of war too! In fact, we talked about war in Mali this morning in class, and we were several groups to be inspired by this theme to create our soundscapes.
On this sonicposcard, we can listen aircraft noise hunting, crackling, or attack helicopters…

The sonicsnaps (sounds centrifuge, oven …) inspired us to create a soundscape around the war. The sounds are violent and we can imagine that we are attacked by enemies!
Can you guess what country we could be?

According to you, where are we?
We are on a ship at sea, and we come near a deserted island, but we still do not know what we’ll find!

All of sounds together give some repetitive bull sounds. So we decided to give to these composition «waste deposal» as key word. Sounds seem to show objects which are about to be crushed by a big machine.

We wanted to create a ambience like a halloween night in which sounds remain chain saw for exemple. We hear somebody running out until a ghost train to keep this person to go somewhere safe but he is in a haunted house and at the end, a big noise of a chain saw stops this track.

Sounds of our track remain us ski. We listen to lashing sounds like when we turn quickly in a big descent in order to slow down. We also hear some people who cry are speak with a lot of wind like at the mountain where everybody ski.

Sonic Snaps from Rennes in the snow !

Hello,

Friday, we first listened to the Berliner soundscapes, and we are delighted to hear that German are made from our mysounds ! We tried to recognize all the sounds that we recorded.
Then we went into introducing the recorders once again, and we separated the classe in 7 groups to record sounds in the school (classroom, corridors, playground…). The playground was snow, we were able to record the sound of footsteps in the snow and snowball fights! We took benefit before it disappears. Today, we have no snow in Rennes unlike Paris! What luck !

We had instructions to record the sounds:
– Record environnemental sounds
– Record a moving object with the recorder in a fixed position
– Record a stationary object with the recorder motion
– Record a close sound (“zoom in” on a sound)
– Record a far away sound, distant

Here is a selection of audio recordings made at school by each group:

When we finihed the session, we got the recorders at home. We gave the recorders to the leaders of each group because we have only 13 recorder and we are 30 students in this class !

Here is a selection of audio recordings made at home by each group:

You can hear the others sonicsnaps recorded by each group on Freesound !

Today, we listened to some recordings at home, we recognized the sounds of a centrifuge, a plastic ball, a hammer … and even the subway!

We were separated into groups and we started our audio editing on Audacity, from the sounds made at home and in school. Friday, you can listen to our audio postcards, we look forward to hearing yours !

See you soon !
