The City Rings

Part: Germany



For this session we started by watching Wochende by Walter Ruttman, thanks Rennes for the tip! It seemed important to have a listen since it was possibly recorded in Berlin and also very good for hearing nice edited cuts between field recording sounds. We also worked more on finding more sounds with various textures around the school – students took it in turns of going around the school to record in a small groups of pairs guided by Vincent.

While the other students and l stayed in the class room listened to more sounds off the city rings site and played the youtube of  Ligeti’s Artikulationleg graphic scorefor an example of a graphic score and electronic textures (It has been great to see people doing the graphic scores this time in the city rings and extending the TCR methodology.) while students played the surrealist game Exquisite Corpus creating there own interpretations though drawing what they were hearing.

We have had some IT glitches so our final postcard are still a work in progress, since l am their Art teacher we have the fortunate opportunity to keep exploring the sound medium and are also working on making an installation to show the rest of the school community next year.

5B inside headphones..

Hello again from Berlin! In today’s session we started by listening to the sounds from Rennes while students discussed a little what they thought they heard. Then the 18 Students present took headphones pairing up or working solo with either MacBooks with sound editing software while other students taught each other sound Apps on I-pads that can capture and modify sounds to be played back. It was great to see how students were engaged in working with sound being it through the TCR method or students sharing ideas and ways of playing with sound through their devices!!
After the session l still haven’t heard everything that was going on inside the headphones but here is a mix by Julian –

We also looked at Music For One Apartment And Six Drummers which is always great!
Tomorrow we will go on the streets for sound snaps!! and l promise photos!


Berlin Metropolitan School

Hello again! I will be doing TCR at Berlin Metropolitan school again (where I am also one of the Art teachers) I will be working with the students of grade 5B and also with the help of Co Curricula Educational Educator Vincent Heller who is 5B’s Class assistant. Berlin Metropolitan school is situated in Mitte. BMS is a growing international school with 48 different nationalities. There are 760 student in the whole school from Kindergarden to grade 10. The Primary school in an international baccalaureate accredited school that allows students to learn through a transdisciplinary and student lead inquiry based learning situation.
I am looking forward to hearing what sounds 5B’s ears catch and swopping some sounds with our partner school!!

Compact Sonic Postcards from Essen!

The very last session on the project is over and we will definitely miss these meetings in the next weeks. It was so much fun.

We fougth with audacity (sometime things got lost or simply our hands slipped away, and suddeny everything was gone)

but we won!

We decided to make them short but effectiv. That was too because we had so many short recordings.

So here, dear folks from Palau Solità i Plegamans, are now our little sonic postcards for you.


To imagine what could be in the postcards and how it could be sounding like we draw even some postcards at home.

We found that easier (because we could talk about colours and form of sounds) than describing what one could send on a postcard, then we transformated these thoughts with the sounds we recorded at home to these results. We hope, you have fun listening.

And yes, we found the effect section in audacity! Hear what we have done!

After finishing our compositions we found it very easy to talk about pictures we got in our heads when we listened to the postcards of Can Cladellas (you will find the comments in the comments ;-) )
Because we now experienced that a sound when listened repeatedly, it get’s more and more abstract and we don’t perceive it any more as the source of the recording but as a part of a sound picture.

We loved the whole project so much, that we could edit the sounds ourselves, that we could take the recorders at home, that we were working in groups, …


Sonic Snaps from Essen


what a day, first we listened to the soundscapes from can cadellas. We tried to recognize all the sounds that we recorded. How colourful they were put together. really a good job! Then we went into introducing the recorders once again. It took us a while, because we had very different once. Since we hadn’t very much time on the first obejct recordings, we now took the time and discovered other ways to make sound.
Then we went out and hunted for more sounds.

And of course the snow was one of our favorites.

When we finished we got the recorders at home. And we are so exited of what will come out of that.

For Sonic snaps students explored the school build for sounds with the recorder in hands.

Soundscapes – BMS mixes Rennes sounds


For this session we discussed using garage band. The students were already savy with the software from their personal experience and music class, as the students are doing a Unit Of Inquire into ‘sound and light’ though all subjects they have also been working with and thinking about the recording and editing of field recordings.

Since they needed no further instruction we had a look at some graphic scores, we look at the graphic scores of John Cage and Mortan Feldman.  Students then draw these while listening to the sounds.

Our first little soundscape

today we made our first soundscape with three of the object sounds of our spanish partner, but first we did a little listening exercises and characterized sounds by colour, emotions, the ways of producing and material. We found it easier to talk about the colours of the sounds than emotions.

And we guessed what the sources of the spanish sounds were. We thought about motor blocks and motorbikes (but then again we thought that it would have been very difficult to get a motor block into the school ;-). We found kitchen mixer, ducks, sandpaper, horses, saws but then again we thought about saws made of plastic and metal?

And when we saw the picture of the fork and the pencil holder, we recognized the neon yellow sound we heard in object 3.

Then we learnt how to use audacity, how to import, edit and level the sound. We even reversed a sound. And then we played all three sounds together and found that we would have to decrease the level on two tracks to hear the third.

That was our result as a first soundscape:

We would have worked longer on this, but time was already up.

MySounds of Essen

Hello again from the Schillerschule.

Today we had a very exciting day, because we learnt that a school near Barcelona is our partnerschool and they have a basketball field!
But we began the session with showing our objects that we brought from home, we introduced ourselves telling why we choose this object, and what sound it could do. Then we made a little listening exercise to concentrate better on what we hear.
And then everyone from us 22 children recorded with a little help his object and the sound it made.

We learnt that to record objects we have to be very silent in the classroom, and that we have to announce our name and what we record before creating the noise.
We experienced that our own voice and the sound of the object sounds very differently when we record it, just as if we were holding our ear right next to the object.

And while we were recording and talking the time went by so fast we didn’t get to compose our first mysound-composition.
We are all very excited if the partnerschool will find out what we recorded? And what did they record?
